If you’re applying to college as part of the Class of 2026 (starting Fall 2025) and using the Common Application (“Common App”), here are the key changes you’ll want to know.
“Additional Information” Section Word Limit Shortened
If you choose to use the Additional Information section (optional) to add context not covered elsewhere, the word limit has been reduced from 650 words to 300 words for first-year applicants. Be more concise and selective about what you include in that section.
Because the Additional Information section is now only 300 words, if you expect to use it, draft early and be clear about what you’ll include. Avoid repeating content from your main essay or activities section.
“Community Disruption” Question Becomes Broader “Challenges & Circumstances”
The optional question originally meant to capture pandemic-related disruptions is being renamed and broadened to “Challenges and Circumstances” so students can address a wider range of unusual or significant conditions (housing instability, natural disaster, health issues, caregiving responsibilities, etc.). The word limit for that question remains at 250 words.
If you’ve had significant responsibilities (e.g., significant household work, caregiving, job commitments) or challenges (e.g., housing instability, health issues, major disruptions), consider whether you should check the inventory boxes and/or write the optional Challenges & Circumstances statement.
Citizenship / Resident-Status Question Clarified
For international or DACA/undocumented/resident students, the citizenship/residency question wording has been updated to provide more clarity (e.g., adding “Green Card Holder” under permanent resident, reorganizing “U.S. Resident” category).
More Community Colleges on the Platform
The Common App is expanding its member list to include more community colleges, making the platform more accessible for students considering two-year institutions.
